During these warm summer months, we know the difficulties of making sure feed is cool and suitable for delivering. When dealing with 100’s of tonnes worth of stock, this can be quite a job! Here are a few helpful tips which will ensure that your feed stays in the condition that it arrives in, for longer!
Store feed out of direct sunlight
- Keep feed in a shaded building or under a roof.
- Avoid leaving feed bags or bins in direct sun, where temperatures can become much hotter than the surrounding air.
- If possible, orient storage so afternoon sun doesn’t hit feed containers.
Improve airflow
- Store feed in a well-ventilated shed or barn.
- Leave space between feed bags and walls to allow air circulation.
- Use fans to move air in enclosed storage areas, especially during hot, humid weather.
Use appropriate containers
- Store feed in sealed, rodent-proof bins to keep out moisture and pests.
- Metal bins can heat up quickly in the sun, so keep them shaded or insulated.
- Food-grade plastic bins stay cooler if kept out of direct sunlight.
Reduce Moisture
- Keep relative humidity as low as possible.
- Elevate feed bags on pallets instead of placing them directly on concrete floors.
- Repair roof leaks and prevent condensation in storage areas.
Feed during cooler parts of the day
- Offer feed early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are lower.
- Remove uneaten feed that has been sitting in the heat if spoilage is a concern.
For most livestock operations, the biggest improvements come from keeping feed shaded, dry, well-ventilated, and rotating inventory frequently. These practices help maintain feed quality even during extended periods of summer heat.
